How to drive COTA HPDE Track Days

RUNGROUPS

EDGE ADDICTS RUNGROUPS

BLUE (NOVICE)

0-3 Track days. This group is for drivers who are new to the track and just beginning their journey in performance driving. Each novice driver is paired with a qualified instructor to provide in-depth coaching on road course techniques. For their first event with Edge Addicts, all novice drivers will have an assigned instructor to help them build experience and confidence. Drivers with backgrounds in karting or other motorsports may progress more quickly but are still considered novices without prior road course experience, requiring instructor supervision. Passing in this group is allowed only in designated straightaways and must be signaled with a point-by gesture.

INTERMEDIATE - YELLOW (WITH INSTRUCTION)

3+ Track days. When a novice driver gains enough experience and demonstrates comfort with the track, high-speed traffic, and their vehicle, the instructor may recommend advancing them to the Yellow with Instruction run group. This group still requires an instructor to be in the vehicle with the student at all times. Passing is only allowed in straightaways and must be signaled with a point-by gesture.

INTERMEDIATE - YELLOW (SOLO-CERTIFIED)

4-10 Track days. This group is for drivers who have demonstrated sufficient skill and confidence to drive without an instructor. Once an instructor determines that a student is comfortable navigating the track, managing high-speed traffic, and maintaining control of their vehicle independently, they may advance the student to the Yellow Solo run group. This progression reflects the driver’s readiness to take on the track solo while continuing to refine their skills. Passing is only allowed in straightaways and must be signaled with a point-by gesture.

ADVANCED (RED)

COTA Lap time: < 2:40 / 10-20 Track days. The Advanced group is reserved for highly skilled drivers with significant track experience and refined driving techniques. After completing more than 10 track days as a solo driver or achieving lap times of 2:40 or better, a driver may request an instructor for an advancement evaluation. This process includes joining an Advanced session with an instructor for a check ride to assess readiness. Upon successful approval, the driver will be cleared to participate in the Advanced (RED) group, marking a significant milestone in their driving progression. Passing is allowed anywhere, and must be signaled with a point-by gesture.

VERY ADVANCED (WHITE)

COTA Lap time: < 2:30 / 20+ Track days. The Very Advanced group is designed for experienced drivers who have mastered high-performance driving and are ready to take their skills to the next level. Drivers in the Advanced (RED) group may request an advancement evaluation after completing 20+ track days or achieving lap times of 2:30 or better. This evaluation includes a check ride with an instructor during a Very Advanced session to assess their readiness. Once approved, drivers will be eligible to participate in the Very Advanced (WHITE) group. Passing is allowed anywhere, and must be signaled with a point-by gesture.

TRACK RATS (PURPLE)

The Track Rats (PURPLE) group is an exclusive, invite-only run group for the most experienced and advanced drivers. This group is typically reserved for teams or open-wheel vehicles at the highest level of performance. Drivers in the Purple group have exceptional track knowledge, refined driving skills, and a strong ability to handle high-speed, high-performance vehicles. Participation in this group is by invitation only, based on skill level and track experience, ensuring an advanced environment for those pushing the limits of performance driving. Passing is allowed anytime, no point-by required.
